Travelling to Tel Aviv

With an abundance of cheap flights on offer from a variety of high street travel agents and via the numerous websites, it’s a great time to explore Tel Aviv, one of the world’s great modern cities and the capital of Israel.

Founded in 1909 by some Jewish families moving to a desert spot away from inhospitable Jaffa, it is a relatively small city, dwarfed by Jerusalem and Haifa for instance, but half of Israel’s population now live there and the city benefits from their great energy and exuberance for life.

The sea plays a leading role in Tel Aviv’s appeal, the beach with its fine sands stretching for a full six miles. Nightlife is particularly busy, with cafes, bars and restaurants overflowing with customers at all times of the year, the discos and nightclubs seeming never to close.

But there is a more refined side to Tel Aviv for those not so much into the brashness. The historic port town of Jaffa constitutes the old quarter, and its fine views and waterfront walkway have made it a favourite setting for restaurants and leisure activities.

Theatres, concert halls and museums are not lacking either. The Eretz Israel Museum traces local culture over 3000 years, and the Beth Hafutsoth charts the Jewish Diaspora down the centuries, and there are several others. And don’t forget to take a lift to the 49th floor of the Azrieli Centre to see the city in all its glory.

So hop on one of the hundreds of cheap flights and explore the fascinating first city of Israel.
